Setting Up Airport

There are two types of apple router: airport express and airport extreme. In fact, the set up is not as trivial as I though it should be, unless you follow the right steps, which is poorly documented in the accompanying booklet.

  1. Get internet connect from a regular moderm, test the direct ethernet plug into the computer works.
  2. Get a fresh set airport. If you messed up with the setting, restore back to factory setting by pressing the reset button while it is plugged with power, wait until it quick flash amber light, and wait it restart.
  3. Now your computer, with appropriate software, can detect a wireless signal. Connect to it, and open up the airport utility, select the appropriate airport device.
  4. Go through the recommended set up steps, DO NOT try manual set up for now. Everything is straightforward, use DHCP automatically to find the IP, gateway, DNS etc. You may not want to set up password for this time.
  5. Update the airport, and wait for the device to reboot. Now you should have internet connect now. Try to look at the advanced manual set up, change wherever you want, and be sure to add WPA/WPA personal password.
